Boat and Yacht Moving Guide and Tips

Proper preparation of your boat for transport requires careful planning and attention to detail.
A boat that is properly prepared and well secured will serve to protect not only the boat, but the driving public as well. We recommend that the boat be prepared for transport by an experienced boat yard and / or under the supervision of a licensed marine surveyor.
References to surveyors can be found in the business directory.
GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Hatches should be tightly secured and sealed with tape to prevent damage from wind-driven water.
  • All items in the cabin should be packed securely, and all locker doors should be well secured.
  • Normally, the driver won't have a key, so any loose items will cause problems.
  • Be sure your Salon Doors are secured.
  • The batteries should be disconnected and the cables tied off to prevent contact.
  • If you can't be there when your boat is being loaded be sure to request the marina or the surveyor to sign ....off on inspection prior to your boat being loaded

Shrink Wrapping
Why Shrink Wrap Your Boat ?
It's no secret that boats left exposed to harsh weather like Florida's sun and rain will eventually deteriorate. shrink wrapping keeps your boat in exactly the same condition as the day it was wrapped.
Shrink wrap provides a tight smooth form fitting, heat sealed surface secured around the boat which will prevent water from pooling and protect your boats gel-coat finish from chafing that occurs from boats covered by tarps and canvas. Cradles

  • If you have a cradle for transporting your boat, please inspect it carefully for fit, strength, and structural ......integrity. We will not assume any responsibility for damages that result from the failure of your cradle.
  • The same applies if we transport your boat on your trailer, and your trailer fails.
  • If you are moving a sailboat with a centerboard, please be sure that the board is strongly secured so that it ......will stay in the full "up" position.
  • After transport, the keel on sailboats will often appear to show signs of separation at the hull. This is not .....structural damage, but rather cracks in the paint or sealant.
  • For wooden boats, we recommend that they be transported on their own custom cradle. This is suggested ........because there may be inherent structural weaknesses that are not readily visible. A well designed cradle will .......spread the weight of the boat over a much wider contact area.

Tips

  • You will need to store and secure plastic and Plexiglas windshields below. If you are moving your boat during the winter months, then you need to winterize the engine, toilets, the water systems or any other weather sensitive device on the vessel.
  • Shrink wrap is an excellent way to protect your boat during transport. However, a poor shrink wrap may tear due to the high winds generated by road travel. If this happens, the vessel could suffer damage from the shrink wrap beating, chaffing and scratching the vessel. Boat Movers will not accept responsibility for damages caused by shrink wrap.
  • If your larger boat needs to be loaded transom forward, then the craft needs to be shrink wrapped or we cannot accept liability for damage that may occur to the windshield during transport.
  • When moving a sailboat, you must remove all standing rigging, lights, spreaders, wind indicators and all other types of mast rigging prior to transport. Otherwise, boat transporters will not assume liability for damage such as scratches or abrasions that may occur on the mast or damaged rigging or lights left on the mast during transport.
  • All personal belonging should be removed from the boat before transport. These include cash and valuables, clothing, sporting goods or any other materials that are not part of the vessel.
